Say it with me... Blin-ker. It lets everyone else on the road aware of your intention to change lanes or turn. It's really cool, as if by magic, simply flipping this little stick either up or down tells everyone around you "Hey, I'm going to turn left", OR "Hey, I'm going to turn right". That's right! Both left and right! Pretty neat stuff.

Re: The Rules of the Road – The Left Lane

One of my pet peeves as well. It would be nice if there were some better way to enforce this rather than just posting the "keep right except to pass" signs that are very obviously ignored.

Re: Stay off the sidewalks people

Totally understood.

FWIW, I'm certainly no bike lawyer. My bad. I guess these blog entries are more like guidelines we've picked up in our life that we think can help others.

Thanks for you insights on this. We'd happy to have you contribute your own list of bike rules if you would like to submit a counterpoint.

http://writtenrules.com/sub...

Re: Stay off the sidewalks people

Let's all share annoying things about others! Like for instance when the statute referenced as supporting a blog post actually contradicts almost all the points in the post!

* You are not considered a motorist on a bike. What you are considered depends on where and how fast you are traveling. Traveling at walking speeds on a sidewalk or crosswalk? Presto chango, you're a pedestrian. Traveling at walking speeds in the middle of the street with a tuba player, a trombone player, and a drummer? Presto chango, you're the trumpeter in a second line band.
* A person on a bike doesn't belong anywhere, according to the people who designed our current urban infrastructure. Streets (outside of gold-star cities like Boulder) don't accommodate bikes, and bikes aren't welcome there. And as you make clear, bikes aren't welcome on sidewalks either. If you would merely link us to the magic flying bicycle store, or to the human-propelled Escalade store, we'd make quick work of all this misunderstanding and inconvenience. In the meantime, I suppose bikes will be somewhere, and I guarantee the non-bike-riding people there will be red faced and furious about it all. Ding ding!
* Single file is polite. Hmm, OK, it's true. But, um -- are you really threatening on your blog to run into cyclists with your car? You mean, even though you've read the 47 page primer on cycling law that you link to? How fascinating! For posterity's sake, we have to preserve this post. It could end up being very popular someday among the sort of people who stroke their chins, look at the ceiling, and sentence you to 90 days of probation for turning some kid's dad into a smear on the asphalt. Oh wait: Premeditated! Make it 120 days.
* Don't ding the bell when passing? It's the law. See the link you linked to in the linky part of the post above, from which I have pasted a few relevant bits below in order to save others any inconvenient clicking. Also -- er, this is kind of uncomfortable -- dinging is pretty much what you ask for just below.
* I am on your left. Ding ding!

(10) (a) A person riding a bicycle upon and along a sidewalk or pathway or across a roadway upon and along a crosswalk shall yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian and shall give an audible signal before overtaking and passing such pedestrian. A person riding a bicycle in a crosswalk shall do so in a manner that is safe for pedestrians.
(b) A person shall not ride a bicycle upon and along a sidewalk or pathway or across a roadway upon and along a crosswalk where such use of bicycles is prohibited by official traffic control devices or local ordinances. A person riding a bicycle shall dismount before entering any crosswalk where required by official traffic control devices or local ordinances.
(c) A person riding or walking a bicycle upon and along a sidewalk or pathway or across a roadway upon and along a crosswalk shall have all the rights and duties applicable to a pedestrian under the same circumstances, including, but not limited to, the rights and duties granted and required by section 42-4-802.

Re: Stay off the sidewalks people

Oh man. I would've been so pissed if a cyclist slapped me. Did you try slapping him? (For some reason I'm imagining a guy doing that. (At least you're well enough to type!)

I appreciate your comments and agree 100%. I should've mentioned the helmet wearing. This annoys me as well. I have been known to "forget" to wear one but then feel naked while riding.

Cheers to you, Lesley!

Re: Stay off the sidewalks people

I'm also bothered by cyclists on the sidewalk. I know it seems safer for cyclists, but it freaks pedestrians out. A few weeks ago I was walking in LoDo and some cyclist just slapped my left shoulder to let me know he was there. I was like, "Really?"

There are a lot of bicycle accidents involving cars/buses in Boulder/Denver, and like Lesley said, I wonder how many of those are caused by motorists expecting cyclists to do something illegal.

Re: Stay off the sidewalks people

As an avid cyclist in Denver, I'm convinced that the biggest threat to people like myself are other cyclists that refuse to follow the rules of the road. Because people ride wherever they want and do whatever the hell they want, I have been hit twice now (last summer by car, last week by bus) riding in the road where and when I was supposed to. The bus actually expected me to do something illegal, which is why it did not allow for enough room for me on the road.

Yes, cycling can unpredictable because of cars and other obstacles, but if people took the time to learn and follow the rules when they get on a bike, vehicles might actually have better expectations of what we're going to do. I know some people feel safer on the sidewalks, but they don't understand they're just creating more of a hazard for those of us on the road.

You're not the only crotchety old woman that's annoyed by this. I shake my fist at every cyclist on the sidewalk and everyone I see riding without a helmet.

Re: Smart design makes for effective presentations

This is really great advice Josh! Know I know why what I did intuitively makes sense. And, I can repeat it and improve on it. The tip about not being wordy is especially good for a wordy person like myself. This will come in handy if I decide to another presentation at Ignite.

Re: Walk This Way: Rules for Walking Dogs

So true!
